Game Summary:
The Cobalt fellas headed north to Higgins for their first 1 dayer of 2025 excited to reconnect with each other and share fruits of their backyard cricket, net sessions & live/TV watching of the Aussie summer cricket feast! GJCC won the toss and put us into bat - very smart decision as the pitch and out field were very moist leaving the ball to skid variably and low, making run scoring tricky. As a result we faced probably the toughest batting conditions experienced this season to date! Our openers survived several dropped catches early and were able to lay a foundation. Kudos to Vivan and Will who both played very patient innings to retire not out. Boundaries were hard to come by but Flynn, Vivan, Jonny and Isaac all tasted success! Innings break was welcome for refreshments and to discuss tactics and be buoyed up by encouragement from super coach Jaye who rallied us to be switched on in the field and back our commendable bowling unit to defend a lower than usual total. Cobalt delivered in bucket loads with tight, accurate bowling, outstanding fielding and united teamwork to slow GJCC's run rate but with the sun out, runs were flowing more easily. 5 of our 9 bowlers secured wickets with Flynn, Seth and Nate knocking over the stumps on several occasions between them, along with Jonny and Nate achieving a maiden each. Jash and Vivan's spin bowling provided variety to our attack and Jonny's wonderful fast bowling bamboozled the opposition ending with an enviable economy rate of 1.00! Marcus and Isaac showed dedication in the field and our WKs, Lucas and Cam both took important caught behinds for us between them (3 in total), supported by a run out from Flynn & Nate. The match went down to the wire - Cobalt fell just short on securing the win but can be proud of how they fought and showed good sportsmanship throughout. Lessons learnt which we can take into the remainder of our season to keep having fun and improving - slicker running between the wickets, less sundries in our bowling and more purposeful field setting to match bowling and batting skillset. The following anonymous quotes are a fitting way to conclude Cobalt's report for this week - "It’s not about the game you’re playing; it’s about the heart you put into it." "Victory is not just about winning; it’s about fighting till the last ball."
