In a great afternoon local derby at Mawson oval Marist Light secured a first Div 1 and a thrilling victory over Marist Royal, winning by 3 runs in a closely contested match. Isaac Tarrant was given his opportunity to captain the light boys and he quickly won the toss and chose to bowl, setting the stage for a strong start. Marist Light bowlers delivered early breakthroughs, keeping the Royal batting lineup in check. Jack Frawley led the attack with two wickets, while Xander Denny, Will Spencer, Christian Honan, and Henry Hyson each claimed one. The fielding was sharp, highlighted by a brilliant catch from Hugo Foley at point, as Marist Light restricted Marist Royal to 6 for 124 off their 20 overs.
Chasing 125, Marist Light got off to a steady start with Tarrant and Spencer rotating the strike well. However, quick wickets and mounting pressure saw Light begin to fall behind the required run rate. Despite solid contributions from Olie Wilson, Hugo Foley and Nico, they Light found themselves in trouble chasing runs.
ENTER LJ HUGO
With 35 runs needed from the final three overs LH strode to the crease at Light 5/90, LJ unleashed a breathtaking counterattack, smashing 38* off just 16 deliveries, including four boundaries and two massive sixes. His heroics guided Marist Light to 6 for 127, securing a dramatic win.
LJ Hugo was deservedly named Light Player of the Match for his match-winning innings. LJ has threatened to do that to an opposition all season and it was tremendous to see him deliver on the local stage.
This victory was a testament to the team’s resilience, marking a fitting win in a challenging, yet rewarding season. Starting in Division 2 and earning promotion to Division 1, Marist Light has played well, with many close losses and finally claimed a well-earned win over their school rivals. A fantastic effort from the entire squad, much to the delight of coaches and parents alike.
