Willow Talk #11 - Week Ending 2 February

Stage 3 - Division 1

Marist Royal

Marist Royal (3/197) defeated ANU Owls (8/150)

Batting: Ben Callaway (60 n.o.), Archie Brown (41 n.o.), Lachlan Miller (37).

Bowling: Ben Callaway (3 for 10)

Marist Royal started 2025 strongly with a convincing win over ANU Owls. The game featured some great opening and middle order batting supported by disciplined fielding and bowling from our boys. Ben Callaway in particular had a busy morning, retiring not out for 60 before taking 3 wickets as bowler.

Openers Lachlan and Preston set the tone of the batting innings after Marist won the toss and chose to bat. They took advantage of any short balls and gaps in the field to score quickly, scoring almost as many runs as balls delivered.

Preston fell first for 27 off 32 balls, including 3 fours and a six. Lachlan continued to build the innings, scoring 37 from 41 balls, with 6 fours. The middle order took over from there, adding even more pace to the innings. Ben’s rapid-fire 60 included 8 fours and a six, Archie took 41 off 45 balls, and Keyaan stepped up with an impressive 26 off 18 balls. All 3 retired not out, with Marist Royal finishing with a total just shy of 200 runs.

ANU Owls batted out their full 30 overs, but never quite managed the run rate needed to match Marist Royal. Our boys were fast and accurate in the field, intercepting balls before the boundaries and limiting the opposition batters’ options. They showed the depth of their bowling talent, with 6 boys claiming wickets as bowlers: Logan, Nick, Patrick, Lachlan and Kayeen all took one apiece, with Ben adding 3 to the haul. Our ever vigilant wickie Preston delivered 2 stumpings and a catch, and Logan also took a catch.

The win was all the sweeter for Logan and Archie, named captain and vice-captain respectively for the rest of the season. Thanks to coach Cade, manager Maylin, umpire Dave and scorer Alana for their work behind the scenes so the boys could perform at their best.
