Stage 1 Div 2
Marist Navy
Marist Navy (162) defeated YDCC Hurricanes (161)
Batting: Xander Woods 23 (15), Jamie Kimpton 15 (15)
Bowling: Freddie Nisbett 2/12 (3), Hayden Carolan 2/13(3), Xander Woods 2/18 (3)
Notable Player: Xander Woods - for the highest run score of 23 (15), great bowling of 2/18 (3), and a run out!
After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Navy found facing some very fast bowlers a little overwhelming. They scored well with quite a few boundaries, but the loss of wickets was shown in the total. Xander put on a nice display of textbook batting, scoring the highest total of the day with 23 of 15 with 4 boundaries.
After the innings break, the team scored some early wickets to help their total. The opposition were looking good at the crease and took a lot of opportunities to run a quick single. Navy were taking wickets and were very quick in the field. Direct hits at the stumps lead to a few runouts, and it was exactly what the team needed. The opposition looked like they had the game in the bag, with the total always being close. With some very tight bowling and a few last-minute wickets, there were only a few runs in it.
However, it was only in the last over of the game and therefore the entire season, that things started to shift. Jamie was set up to bowl the last over. Navy were trailing by seven runs. Jamie took two wickets, leaving him on a hat-trick. With two balls to go, Navy were only leading by one run. The final two balls of the over were dots! They managed to keep the lead and won the last game of the season. It was definitely a nail-biter. All parents on the sideline had no idea how that happened. Even the opposition thought they had won. The boys were so excited. It was like they had won the grand final. They celebrated with hugs and in song. The team were definitely shocked but elated with the win.
What an end to the season! Well done Navy!
