The boys took the field for their last game of the season out for revenge against Weston Creek who caused one of our only two losses for the season. The boys were confronted with overnight rain and long grass at Pearce Oval which was going to make run scoring hard work for both sides. Weston Creek won the bat flip and elected to field.
Our batting innings started in a steady fashion with Ethan and Henry rotating the strike and stealing byes when they could. The ball was skidding on and the outfield pulled up most shots well before the boundary. Lewis and Ollie then added some momentum through sensible batting to the first break with Royals sitting at 59 off 10 overs. The middle order built on that momentum with Sam and Liam running very well between the wickets. The innings was bookended by excellent innings' from Tom (16) and Conor (15) who found plenty of gaps in the field and ran hard. Most pleasing was how the boys protected their wickets in difficult conditions, only giving up 5 wickets for the innings, and scrapping their way to a solid score of 120 off their 20 overs. That said, it was a very gettable score with Weston Creek possessing a strong batting line up and the boys needed to come out firing to win from here.
When we commenced our bowling innings it was clear the boys had come to play! Tom struck with his third ball finding his rhythm and pace early before Conor took a wicket with his fourth ball to swing the momentum Royal's way. The next few overs kept the runs down before Liam spun a big wrong un' through the gate, and two wickets fell in the following over (including a great outfield catch by Conor) as the boys got their tail up. Ethan then stood up in the tenth over picking up two wickets as Weston Creek went to the break with 64 off ten overs. The bowling and fielding after the break was nothing short of exceptional. Every bowler contributed either taking regular wickets or keeping boundaries to a minimum. Our fielding was excellent and a special shout out to our keepers Sam and Tom who were just about flawless with the gloves. Liam went on to pick up another two wickets to finish with three, whilst Henry, who picked up a calf injury whilst batting, showed real grit and determination to not only bowl his overs but finish with three important wickets. Weston Creek were restricted to 128 and Royals finished comfortable 44-run victors (with receipts kept!).
It was a fantastic way to end a 12-2 season where the boys not only improved as players but more importantly had an absolute blast playing this great game. Well done boys, your coaches are very proud you!
