T20 INVITATIONAL
MARIST VS SYDNEY GRAMMAR EDGECLIFF
Friday 18th September, Marist had the privilege of hosting Sydney Grammar Edgecliff for an Invitational T20 played on Marist Oval 3. Sydney Grammar have played Marist on a number of occasions and our primarily Stage 2 (under 13) boys were very excited at the opportunity to represent Marist and show off their skills.
The boys came together for the first time only days before today's game, but it was clear that they were going to make the most of a fun and unique experience.
Sydney Grammar and Marist teams were made up of players from various Stage 1 and 2 years and divisions, and the Marist boys should be commended for how quickly they came together as a team, trained hard and demonstrated plenty of Marist spirit.
MATCH WRAP UP
On a crisp Canberra morning, captain Aarav won the toss and elected to bat with clear blue skies and a very fast outfield. Marist got off to a cautious start with the new ball skidding through and enough sideways movement to cause some problems for our openers Sam S and Yash. Yash settled, found his range and the boundaries started flowing as he finished strongly with 22* (including a huge six!). Ethan kept the momentum going (16*) before Aarav played a captain's knock with a stylish and at times destructive 34* with five boundaries. Solid contributions followed from Dan (20*) and Sam B (20*) as Marist set a strong total of 3-137 off 20 overs.
Aarav and Conor took the new ball and kept things under control in the opening overs before Xander broke the game open with two wickets in his first over - finishing with 3/7. Jasper jagged an important wicket before the drinks break as Sydney Grammar was sitting at a competitive 4-62 after 10 overs. After the break, the end proved swift with Hardy claiming 3 wickets in one over (3/12), followed by another quick wicket and a very sharp run out to dismiss Sydney Grammar for 69, securing victory by 68 runs.
GRATITUDE AND THANKS
While the Marist boys played exceptionally well, what stood out the most was the positive attitude of both sides and tremendous spirit shown throughout the game - it was impressive. Sydney Grammar were an absolute pleasure to host and we hope they can return again next year for another great clash.
Thank you to Sam Norton-Knight for the set-up and the very well-received post-game BBQ — agreed to be the best lunch the boys had all week. Thanks also to Phil Belcher for organising all the practical necessities that helped bring the day together so impressively.
We are grateful to Marist Cricket alumni Tom and Abi for giving up their time to umpire the game, and to the parents of the players for their support for today's game - and to the legions of Junior and Senior School Marist boys who ventured down to the Oval 3 - thank you for providing high-volume but good-natured support for our players.
Last but certainly not least, to the Marist players who took the field today - well done on a tremendous performance! You should be very proud of yourselves.
